Limited Capacity filling up

When you have a mission, you're magnetic...to the right people. It can be challenging to create and then articulate a mission, though. Not just because it takes some thoughtfulness-you're thoughtful. Not just because it takes time-you're willing to do the important work. It can be so hard because it means releasing:
  • the infinite other things you could be working on (loss)
  • the self-protection and inaction that a lack of clarity enables (it's uncomfortable outside of your comfort zone)
  • the safety provided by not having to put yourself out there in a clear way (we evolved to avoid rejection in order to survive)
  • not having to stand out ("Who do you think you are?")
  • potentially separating yourself from your community/family ("If you grow, then you won't be one of us.")
So, it's pretty understandable that most don't do the work of mission-generating and then make the leap to expressing it. On the other side of that work and commitment, though, is increased effectiveness. Upsides include that:
  • people get you...faster
  • those who aren't aligned with your mission know it immediately and don't ask for any of your time
  • those who are aligned with your mission seek you out and arrive more ready to partner/help/buy
  • you make better, more confident decisions
  • people know how to help you
  • you more easily connect with bold, brave people who will inspire you
  • you will inspire others without even knowing it
It's clarifying and fun to have a clear mission that you make decisions in alignment with. That good-feeling way of operating in your work has all kinds of positive waterfall consequences. The research is clear that when you're in an elevated mental state, you're more effective across every beneficial category measured; from creativity and productivity to sales ability and immunity.

In this session, craft a mission for yourself as a professional or for your company that you can translate into conversations, pitches, marketing copy, and LinkedIn.
